Tommy Howard plays with the sort of unadorned, straight to amp guitar tone reminiscent of mid-20th century jazz guitar heroes like Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, or Barney Kessel, but his debut album, Storybook, is no dated affair. The ten original tunes bridge the sound of classic, swinging jazz guitar with a modern sensibility. The Austin-based guitarist is influenced not only by more recent jazz musicians like Kurt Rosenwinkel and Brian Blade, but also hip-hop, rock, and other post-jazz musical genres. The tuneful compositions of Storybook, played with heartfelt precision, tell a poignant tale of the guitarists musical journey. Tommy’s trio is rounded out with his fellow superb local musicians, Daniel Durham on bass and Brandon Guerra on drums.

Viriditas, the debut album from NYC based composer/guitarist Charlie Rauh, takes its name from a word favored by the 12th century mystic Hildegard Von Bingen. The term, which translates to greenness, is used to exemplify renewal and divine grace as evident in the world’s natural surroundings. The record illustrates a concise picture of precious minutia that sprawls Rauh’s life, paying tribute to people and places that continue to inspire a renewing sense of gratefulness. The album of eight original solo guitar pieces was recorded at Le Feuil, a farm in the south of France. The goal was to simplify the approach to a solitary guitar being captured with immediacy, and vulnerability.

Guitarist Cameron Mizell’s latest album, Negative Spaces, places an emphasis on the less-is-more approach, where the spaces between notes are as vital as the notes themselves. The magic of this music lies in melody, with the catchy tunes hinting at not only vintage jazz but rock’n’roll and all manner of Americana. Mizell composed the music away from the guitar, beginning with singable melodies that weave throughout the album in a suite-like nature, and allowing the rest of the arrangements to form organically. If the the guitar is the “singer” on this album, Brad Whiteley plays the ideal accompanist on various keyboards, with Kenneth Salters’ dynamic drumming ranging from apposite brush textures full percussion ensemble.

I Walk Amongst The Humans
Trumpeter Jon Crowley continues to forge a highly personal repertoire and career path with his first album on Destiny Records, I Walk Amongst The Humans. The music reflects on the human condition–what it means to be human–empathy, vulnerability, and the emotions we feel towards others in complex relationships. Influenced by the northwest alternative-rock sound of the early 2000s, the compositions and arrangements use rock-inspired phrasing and form, upending the typical melody-solo-melody concept one might expect from looking at this quintet line-up on paper. Crowley is joined by John Beaty on alto saxophone, Noah Berman on guitar, Brad Whiteley on piano and Fender Rhodes, Ben Thomas on bass, and Max Maples on drums.
