Destiny Records Releases

Tommy Howard

Tommy Howard plays with the sort of unadorned, straight to amp guitar tone reminiscent of mid-20th century jazz guitar heroes like Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, or Barney Kessel, but his debut album, Storybook, is no dated affair. The ten original tunes bridge the sound of classic, swinging jazz guitar with a modern sensibility. The Austin-based guitarist is influenced not only by more recent jazz musicians like Kurt Rosenwinkel and Brian Blade, but also hip-hop, rock, and other post-jazz musical genres. The tuneful compositions of Storybook, played with heartfelt precision, tell a poignant tale of the guitarists musical journey. Tommy’s trio is rounded out with his fellow superb local musicians, Daniel Durham on bass and Brandon Guerra on drums.

John McNeil & Mike Fahie

Trumpeter John McNeil and trombonist Mike Fahie have both led active careers as jazz musicians, whether leading their own bands or sharing the stage with other jazz luminaries. McNeil has long been regarded as one of the most creative and thoughtful improvisors and composers in jazz since the late ’70s, when he began leading his own band, recording and touring internationally. Fahie has been making a name for himself as a sideman, holding down the lead trombone chair for the Grammy-nominated Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society among other elite large jazz ensembles, and turned heads with Anima, his debut recording as a leader in 2010. But as a pair they have been upheld one of the most important traditions in jazz, leading a weekly jam session in Brooklyn for more than five years. Over that time, McNeil and Fahie developed an intimate rapport for each other’s playing. The music of Plainsong is illustrative of a deep relationship between like-minded musicians, who may be of different generations, create music of timeless beauty. For this session, they were joined by pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Joe Martin, and the great Billy Hart on drums.

Memory / Imagination
Cameron Mizell

The second solo guitar release from Cameron Mizell, Memory/Imagination features nine deeply emotional improvisations. Recorded November 9, 2016, the day after the election, each piece is a meditation on the fight for social justice in America, not just through this election cycle, but issues that have been relevant for generations and have an impact felt across the world. Mizell picked up his guitar that afternoon as a catharsis, and decided to hit record only to document the experience. The resulting music is contemplative, dark, and vulnerable, but offers glimmers of hope and perseverance–abstract soundtracks to the imagination of a solitary musician. The album is his third for Destiny Records, and follows the path of his solo debut, The Edge of Visibility, expanding on the adventurous use of effects to create sonic soundscapes, but also dialing it back for stark, pure guitar playing of austere beauty. Accompanying the album’s release will be a series of multidisciplinary, collaborative videos with visual and performing artists inspired by the music and topics at hand.

The Wishing Stones
Tom Guarna

Guitarist Tom Guarna is joined by a stellar band of pianist Jon Cowherd, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade for his seventh album as a leader and Destiny Records debut, The Wishing Stones. The title is inspired by a trip to Aruba’s Rock Wish Garden, which features thousands of stone totems constructed by visitors, each representing a prayer, wish, or aspiration of it’s creator. Similarly each composition on The Wishing Stones is an emblem for an emotion, memory, or dedication by the guitarist. The music ranges from pure, expressive melodies to exciting lines unfurling from Guarna’s glowing, quicksilver guitar tone over the momentum of the band. Cowherd, Patitucci, and Blade each shine throughout this album, whether trading solos with the guitarist or playing the perfect accompaniment for the song. Guarna’s reputation as a guitarist’s guitarist and outstanding musician has long been known amongst his peers. Framing his compositions, sound, and improvising amongst a trio of a well known rhythm section will expose him to a wider jazz audience and solidify his stature as one of the most exciting guitarists on the scene.

Charlie Rauh

Viriditas, the debut album from NYC based composer/guitarist Charlie Rauh, takes its name from a word favored by the 12th century mystic Hildegard Von Bingen. The term, which translates to greenness, is used to exemplify renewal and divine grace as evident in the world’s natural surroundings. The record illustrates a concise picture of precious minutia that sprawls Rauh’s life, paying tribute to people and places that continue to inspire a renewing sense of gratefulness. The album of eight original solo guitar pieces was recorded at Le Feuil, a farm in the south of France. The goal was to simplify the approach to a solitary guitar being captured with immediacy, and vulnerability.

Negative Spaces
Cameron Mizell

Cameron Mizell - Negative SpacesGuitarist Cameron Mizell’s latest album, Negative Spaces, places an emphasis on the less-is-more approach, where the spaces between notes are as vital as the notes themselves. The magic of this music lies in melody, with the catchy tunes hinting at not only vintage jazz but rock’n’roll and all manner of Americana. Mizell composed the music away from the guitar, beginning with singable melodies that weave throughout the album in a suite-like nature, and allowing the rest of the arrangements to form organically. If the the guitar is the “singer” on this album, Brad Whiteley plays the ideal accompanist on various keyboards, with Kenneth Salters’ dynamic drumming ranging from apposite brush textures full percussion ensemble.

I Walk Amongst The Humans
Jon Crowley

JC_IWAH_cvrTrumpeter Jon Crowley continues to forge a highly personal repertoire and career path with his first album on Destiny Records, I Walk Amongst The Humans. The music reflects on the human condition–what it means to be human–empathy, vulnerability, and the emotions we feel towards others in complex relationships. Influenced by the northwest alternative-rock sound of the early 2000s, the compositions and arrangements use rock-inspired phrasing and form, upending the typical melody-solo-melody concept one might expect from looking at this quintet line-up on paper. Crowley is joined by John Beaty on alto saxophone, Noah Berman on guitar, Brad Whiteley on piano and Fender Rhodes, Ben Thomas on bass, and Max Maples on drums.
